Christmas in Normandy
Markets, Illuminated Villages and Festive Days Out
There’s a wonderful sense of magic in Normandy around Christmastime…
As the days become shorter, the villages and towns of the Orne and neighbouring Mayenne begin to sparkle and shine with Christmas spirit! Little markets appear in village squares and our historic towns take on a wonderful festive atmosphere.
A much quieter and intimate option than your large scale city markets, (with crowds so deep you’re lucky if you dont spill all of your mulled wine!), South Normandy is a lovely option for a few winter days exploring medieval towns and pretty villages, all filled with local food and community Christmas spirit a plenty.
The church in Beauchêne is a highlight of the Villages Illuminés!

Now you know what’s on, read on to learn what you can expect and how you can enjoy all of the festivities in this beautiful area of France this Christmas…
From our first visit to France in December 2025, we noticed they do festive very differently…
A Collective Christmas:
All across France, local communities go all out to showcase their town or village’s architectural heritage by lighting up cobblestone streets and centuries old churches at this time of year. Different to some other European traditions, public spaces in France act as the true ‘living room’ of French towns and with the support of the local mairies (town halls) they transform streets, squares and shopfronts into festive hubs to help draw visitors to the area, support local artisans and boost seasonal commerce. Communities come together to make their towns a natural focal point for the season, much more so than their own homes, where they can enjoy collective holiday cheer!
This comes through in an abundance as you travel across the region at this time of year and there’s so much to see and enjoy just from our little corner of South Normandy…
The Villages Illuminés of the Bocage:
Before we even see a single Christmas Market, the magic begins much closer to home as from the end of November, villages across the Bocage Normand are transformed by thousands of lights and decorations as part of the Villes et Villages Illuminés tradition.
Right on our doorstep our very own Ceaucé gets into the spirit, along with Saint-Mars-d’Egrenne, Beauchêne, Rouellé, Mantilly and La Michaudiére to name a few and they officially start on 28 November.
Spend a quite lovely evening visiting as many as you can, stopping for hot drinks, crêpes and whatever other festive treats take your fancy along the way!
How many Villages Illuminés could you visit in one weekend this winter!
If you don’t fancy driving around the illuminated villages, Destination Domfront Bagnoles is running ‘Voyage Gourmand au Pays des Illuminations’. An evening mini bus excursion visiting some of the villages illuminés.
Departures from Bagnoles-de-l’Orne are planned on 5, 6, 12 and 13 December from 4:30pm until 9pm.
There’s festive food stops along the way including warm treats and of course mulled wine so it’s quite a lovely option for a winters evening. Places may be limited so it’s advisable to book. Find more information here.
Christmas in Domfront en Poiraie
Just 15 minutes from us here at Le Tertre, our lovely local medieval town is particularly atmospheric at Christmastime.
The historic cobbled streets, half timbered houses and medieval castle ruins provide a beautiful backdrop for the festive season.
The cobbled streets of Domfront create a movie-esque scene at Christmas
The Christmas Medieval and Gastonomic Market returns to Domfront from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 December.
You can expect artisan stalls and festive food as well as medieval inspired entertainment and activities in the heart of the old town.
You’ll get the combination of the history, local food and old-fashioned charm all in this beautiful medieval setting. It won’t be flashy or expensive, it’ll be centered around the communities passion for its history and festive traditions which we find quite inspiring.
Explore the town and take in the panoramic views from the château ruins, it’s all quite lovely and worth a visit.
Christmas Markets around the area;
There’s plenty of smaller Christmas Markets scattered around the surrounding villages and towns so it’s easy to combine a days exploring and a visit to a market…

Much more local and very family orientated you’ll find singing and dancing, local producers and artisans, saucisson and hot drinks as well as a visit from ‘pére noël’ himself at 19:00!
A Cosy Christmas Escape at Le Tertre
Planning a pre-Christmas escape isn’t just centered around the markets you’ll visit or the villages you’ll discover, just as important is where you’ll be heading home to at the end of the day or evening.
Le Tertre is set in the very peaceful countryside just outside of Ceaucé and we have three one-bedroom cottages perfect for couples, or, a traditional Farmhouse that sleeps 6 which is ideal for when family or friends want to join you. All are converted from the 200 year old stone farm buildings and have retained so much of their original charm.
Woodburning stoves will ensure your evening is a cosy one as you enjoy a home cooked meal, a glass of wine or even your favourite Netflix show and of course your four-legged friend will be curled up on the sofa next to you!
There are no crowds, no busy streets and very little noise and on a clear night the starry skies are quite something to behold, making November and December a lovely time to discover this quieter corner of Normandy.
From your quiet morning coffee, café lunches to atmospheric markets and festive food, South Normandy makes a wonderful quaint little Christmas break.
Just under 2 hours from Caen, you can also pick up some of Normandy’s more famous landmarks along the way to really make the most of your trip!
